Gallery Direct is launching several new products at this year’s Bed Show, including an innovative new mattress collection, Seagreen, that combines its well-known comfort and quality with an incredible story of upcycled sea plastic.
Every year around 8 -12 million tons of plastic goes into the oceans, killing thousands of marine creatures. To help overcome this issue, the Gallery team has developed its Seagreen mattress collection, which transforms ocean plastic into high quality, comfortable mattresses.
Seagreen mattresses feature a certified Seaqual ticking, as well as fillings made from recycled plastics. Seaqual is an initiative to challenge plastic pollution and to clean the oceans from marine litter. Seaqual registered products, like the ticking on Gallery’s Seagreen mattresses, contain marine plastic, captured from the sea, and upcycled to produce environmentally friendly textiles that contribute to preserving natural resources whilst reducing waste in the planet’s oceans.
To help reduce marine plastics even more, the polyester fillings selected for the Seagreen mattresses are also manufactured from recycled plastic, predominantly bottles, but also other recyclable plastic items. A double Seagreen 1000 model contains the equivalent of over 150 recycled 500ml bottles. The double 1400 and 2000 models each contain the equivalent of over 180 recycled 500ml bottles.
Sustainability and consideration of environmental issues are key factors in the decision-making process when buying products for many retail customers. Public awareness of the problem of ocean plastics has risen recently, increasing the demand for products that help combat this issue.
